La Ceiba is located on the North coast of Honduras, right on the Caribbean Sea. Many tourists want to know how to get to La Ceiba, because it is on their route towards the Bay Islands of Honduras.

Traditionally, travelers will fly into San Pedro Sula International Airport and then travel by land to La Ceiba. If you are doing this, this easiest, and really the best option is to go to the Hedman Alas Bus Company office at the Airport. It is located in the area where the rent a car agencies are. As you exit the international arrival gate, take a left and you will enter this area. Here you will find the Hedman Alas bus company that will help you arrange your transportation to La Ceiba. They have several daily departures from the airport to their bus terminal in town, where you will change buses in the comfort and security of a private terminal, with impeccably clean bathrooms, a small cafeteria, and comfortable seating facilities. Departures are coordinated to coincide with most international arrivals, and you can even pre book and pay your seat online, prior to your arrival by visiting their secure web page. www.hedmanalas.com. A tip: you have probably been travelling for several hours by the time you get to the bus. They offer special first class seating, they call Ejecutivo Plus, which offers really comfortable almost fully reclining seats that are oversized. Spend a few extra bucks and treat yourself to these seats, you will be happy you did so! This is without doubt the best option if you are planing how to get to La Ceiba!

Hedman Alas has a total of 4 daily departures from San Pedro Sula to La Ceiba, so chances are that you will catch a bus and get to La Ceiba that same day. Once in La Ceiba, you can hire a cab at the Hedman Alas terminal in town. They are centrally located and the cab fare is very affordable. Drivers are screened by the company, so you are safe to get in one. Some of the hotels and inns will offer you arrival transfer service. This is the case of La Villa de Soledad B&B, whose owner, John Dupuis will personally pick you up at the terminal and drive you to their boutique bed and breakfast in the Cangrejal River.

If your flight arrives around mid day, you can also catch the Sosa Airlines flight, (www.aerolineassosa.com)  which leaves around 2:30 p.m. the flight costs about $75 US per person, one way, and is a short 30 minute flight, that will get you to the Goloson International Airport in La Ceiba. Here, I strongly suggest that you hire one of the local cabs in the airport to take you to your hotel, unless of course you have arranged with the hotel where you will be staying at to pick you up. Once again, La Villa de Soledad Bed and Breakfast will provide you with the service if you are staying with them!

A new option, which is often overlooked, is to take your international flight to Roatan, which is located just a few miles off the coast, very close to La Ceiba. Roatan is getting more and more flights, and although they do not yet have daily schedules, some airlines, like United, have a scheduled flight there three days a week. There are direct, nonstop flights into Roatan from Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Miami and Newark, with at least one weekly flight scheduled. This means that you can fly into Roatan, and then continue your trip to La Ceiba. If you have decided on this option, you can either book a flight in Roatan to La Ceiba, there are several airlines with a variety of daily flights, or you can take the ferry from Roatan to La Ceiba. The latter has the advantage of a very reliable schedule and a usually pleasant 1 ½ hour trip to La Ceiba. Taxis are plentiful, and screened by the ferry company, so once in La Ceiba, you can take them without any worry. Once again, you can always arrange for a pick up with some of the hotels in town.

If you have chosen to travel to La Ceiba, then you are most probably looking forward to visiting National Park and seeing some local wildlife. If this is the case, do not overlook the Cangrejal River Valley, which is very close to La Ceiba, but will provide for a unique experience out of town. There are several different hostels, inns and bed and breakfasts, most of them with unique service and offering a quality experience. I suggest you check out the trip advisor section for hotels in La Ceiba. Make sure you are looking in the inns and bed and breakfasts option, since most of the properties that are in the Cangrejal River are under this category.

Hopefully, this information has been usefull and you now know how to get to La Ceiba!
