Honduras Birding
Honduras Birding is a growing niche market for travelers visiting Honduras!
I happen to live in one of the top Honduras birding areas. Actually, my wife, Soledad and myself run a small boutique bed and breakfast appropriately named La Villa de Soledad. I say this for a couple of reasons: first of all, her name is Soledad, and this is HER house… second of all, we are located in an area that feels remote and invites to relax in nature in the solitude of our location. In all honesty, although the location seems remote, we are only a few minutes away from downtown La Ceiba, close to all the advantages of a medium sized city, but far from the hassle and bustle of modern city life.
This morning, as I lay in bed half asleep I listened to a quiet noise in the gardens around our lovely property… A gecko? No, they don’t really like the gardens, perhaps they are some sorts of lizards or noisy insects… But the improbable sound kept going on, and then suddenly as I awakened, I distinguished the sound clearly: a toucan! Yes a keel billed toucan, or if you prefer a fruit loops toucan! They are abundant in this part of Honduras, and they are always a treat to see! One of the most outstanding options for tourism in the area is Honduras birding. Honduras is located in a perfect location, right in the heart of Central America, and we get many different birds from both, North and South America who call Honduras their home during some time of the year or another.
Honduras birding has been a difficult activity until recently. First of all, there were few Honduras birding guides that were truly well prepared to do a good job and identify the many birds. Second, all of Honduras birding was done with birding guide books of Costa Rica and Panama. There simply was no guide to the birds of Honduras out there… until now!
Out of coincidence, Robert Gallardo, an US ex peace corps volunteer who just fulfilled a life time dream of putting together a book about birds of Honduras sent me a copy of the very first batch of his recently published book: Guide to the Birds of Honduras, which I received today. The book is extensive, has outstanding full colored plates with drawings of the different birds to be seen in Honduras. With this new book, Honduras birding has just jumped to completely different level!
La Villa de Soledad B&B is located on the Cangrejal River Valley, right smack between Pico Bonito and Nombre de Dios National Parks. This is one of the prime areas for Honduras birding. I am proud to say that we have our very own copy of this new book which of course are happy to lend to our clients who visit us with the intention of doing some Honduras birding activities. At La Villa de Soledad B&B we have a list of different certified bird guides that we can arrange to help you enjoy some of the best Honduras birding you will find. Come, relax in nature with us and do some of the best birding you have done in years!
