Tired of working at home during this Covid 19 pandemic? We all know that it can get old fast! What if you could work from Paradise? At La Villa de Soledad B&B we have made a special effort to secure the best internet service in the Cangrejal River Valley. Imagine spending some relaxed days with a spectacular view and short getaways to admire the toucans or escape to the river to cool off after a hot day!
Currently, there is one important amenity we all look for at a hotel. I am of course talking about internet. Most of us can all go without a TV in the room. We do not need a pool if we have a crystal-clear river next to our hotel. Neither do we need air-conditioning. Especially during the Covid-19 Pandemic when closed rooms with recirculating air have become a no-no! But we do need to have a chance to connect to the web and keep up to date with our business, work, and family.
Yes, you Really Can Work from Paradise!
So, if you are home working and need a break, come, and work from paradise at La Villa de Soledad. Our internet service is provided via a fiber optic cable, and we have the best bandwidth available in the area. Not only do you deserve a break, but you also deserve to enjoy paradise! You might like to know that all our staff at La Villa de Soledad have at least one jab of their Covid-19 shots. We expect that they will all have the second jab within the month of August.
Thus, if you decide to come and work from paradise for a few days. Enjoy our safe, clean setting with bio security measures plus a protected staff. Our well-ventilated areas and low-density setting mean that you will run into few other guests, if any. If you need to pump some adrenaline through your body, consider some World-Class white-water rafting in the Cangrejal River. Additionally, you may simply want to take a hike through the forest.
Last, but not least, you can always choose your favorite hammock on premises and simply relax and read that book that you have not had time to read. Seeking for inspiration, nothing like an escape to work from paradise to become more creative! You can book your stay with us through our website or message us on WhatsApp. We are more than ready to answer your questions and make sure that you enjoy your stay with us while you work from paradise!
Great news! This past Monday, July 12, the staff at La Villa de Soledad got their first Pfizer shot. This means that the totality of staff at La Villa de Soledad are vaccinated against COVID 19! Half of us have both shots, while others have one. We are confident that before the end of August we will all have both shots. Independently of this fact, we are still taking COVID 19 very seriously. All our bio security standards are in place, and we take great effort to make sure that we keep this virus at bay.
Another good piece of news is the fact that all the guides that we use all have at least one jab. This means that you can hire a guide to take you hiking in the park and he will have at least one shot. The same is true about the rafting, canyoneering and zip line guides. This has been possible thanks to the support from the Honduras Institute of Tourism. They have made COVID shots available to all the tourism staff in Honduras. You can visit Copan Ruinas, the Bay Islands, and the Caribbean coast of Atlántida! Relax and feel comfortable that you are safe during your vacations!
Getting my first Covid jab!
Our Facilities are Perfect for Social Distancing!
I must add that the fact that our facilities are very much in the open. In addition, we only have 5 rooms. This means that you will not encounter a large group of persons. Our rooms are spacious and have great cross ventilation. This translates to the fact that you need not worry about an air conditioning unit recirculating the air with the possible virus in your room. We have no air conditioning! Public areas are incredibly open. In fact, the indoors and outdoors blend in seamlessly to create a unique setting. You are away from the hot sun rays and from rain but can enjoy the cool breeze blowing up the river canyon.
There is no doubt that the Cangrejal River area is perfect to enjoy nature. Outdoor facilities in our national parks are readily available. Social distancing is effortless, as our parks are huge, and traffic is low. We are confident that now that you know that the staff at La Villa de Soledad are vaccinated against COVID 19, you will feel motivated and safe visiting us in our little piece of paradise. We will be waiting for you!

We recently had a famous guest stay with us at La Villa de Soledad. I am referring to Nigel Marven, the British adventurer who travels around the World seeking unique animals. It was Nigel´s first time in Honduras, and I can say that he had a great time. In total, he was in Honduras for three weeks and had a blast. One of his first stops was at the Cangrejal River Valley. There, he spent two nights with us at La Villa de Soledad, one of the top eco jungle lodges in Honduras.
Yes Nigel Marven in Honduras!
Nigel had a chance to try white water rafting in the Cangrejal River. He even had a chance to spot and interact with a large snake that locals call “mica”. In English we call it the “Lighting Snake” because of its elegant bright yellow markings that resemble a lightning bolt! The snake is harmless and spends most of its time up in the trees. They can grow up to 6 or 7 feet long!
Perhaps Nigel’s most unique encounter in Honduras was with the typical Honduran “Baleada”. This is a large, thin wheat flour tortilla stuffed with beans. You see, it turns out that Nigel, being the animal lover that he is, is a vegetarian! Baleadas, are wheat tortillas with beans and can also have some cheese, cream and avocado. These last ones are some of my favorites! Nothing like enjoying a baleada after a long day at work!
We had a nice chance to chat with Nigel at La Villa de Soledad during one of the evenings that he spent there. He was a friendly fellow that was impressed with the tropical jungles of Honduras. Nigel Marven also had an opportunity to visit the Lost City of the Monkey God in the Moskitia. He was personally invited by the president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernandez. Nigel Marvin spent also visited the Hog Cays, as well as the Bay Island of Utila. In Western Honduras he visited Gracias, as well as Copan Ruinas.
Nigel Spent a Couple of Nights at La Villa de Soledad B&B!
Birding at La Villa de Soledad
Nigel had some time to do some bird watching at La Villa de Soledad. Although he did see several different species of birds, he was particularly keen with some keel billed toucans whose nest was next door. They were bringing up a couple of chicks and there was quite a bit of activity at their nest.
It was an honor that Beaks and Peaks, the tour operator in charge of the tour chose us for their stay at the Cangrejal River Valley. Nigel even had some time to spend with us one evening. We invited our neighbors from the nearby hotels to stop by and meet him. We all had a pleasant time and are looking forward to Nigel’s program featuring his adventures in Honduras.
Cayos Cochinos are a pristine set of islands in the Caribbean Sea. Fortunately, they are not out in the middle of nowhere and impossible to get to. Getting to Cayos Cochinos is actually easier than you think! They are about 14 miles off the Caribbean Coast of Honduras. Cayos Cochinos are a true Caribbean Paradise! In total, there are 2 small islands and 13 tiny sandy cays. The area is under a protection status by the Honduran Government, as a National Marine Monument. This means there are rules to comply with when you visit the islands.
Sambo Creek is Offers the Best Way of Getting to the Hog Cays
There are two major launching points that provide the proper best options for getting to Cayos Cochinos. One is from the Garifuna Village of Sambo Creek, very near the city of La Ceiba. The other is from the Island of Roatan. Most people take the first option, which is much more affordable, however the boats and service are also quite a bit more basic. From Sambo Creek, getting to Cayos Cochinos will take you about 45 minutes. Because the boats are relatively small, the tour always leaves early in the morning and returns early in the afternoon, to insure they are back on the mainland before the surf gets rough.
From Roatan, you will find several different options. By far the best option is with Ruthless Roatan Charters. They offer a once a week from Roatan to Cayos Cochinos tour. Enjoy the trip in a vintage 41 foot Hatteras that has been fully refitted, and offers the classiest option as far as getting to Cayos Cochinos is concerned. The trip departs from West End at 7:00 a.m. and returns around 4:00 p.m. This is one heck of a tour!
Regardless of whether you are vacationing in Roatan or La Ceiba, a trip to Cayos Cochinos will certainly be one of the highlights of your trip. Many travelers like to experience both, La Ceiba and Roatan. If you would like to visit both, we, at La Villa de Soledad would be more than happy to help you arrange your trip to Cayos Cochinos departing from either location. Come and enjoy the magic of the tropical rain forests of Central America. , Then take a short trip to Roatan to relax in some of the best beaches in the World, in a true Vintage Caribbean Style!
Planning your trip from La Ceiba to the Cangrejal River Valley for a few days?
So you are passing by La Ceiba on your way towards or from the Bay Islands of Utila or Roatan and have decided to stop a couple of days to enjoy the area around the Cangrejal River. You are now trying to figure out the best way to get from La Ceiba to the Cangrejal River Valley.
If you are traveling from the Bay Islands to La Ceiba on the regular ferry service, and will stay at one of the local lodges for several night, your best bet is to contact the inn you will be staying at and have them arrange for your transfer. Many hotels, for example, La Villa de Soledad B&B will provide complimentary round trip arrival and departure transfers from La Ceiba if you are staying with them for three or more nights. If you are planning on a shorter stay, you can arrange the transfers with them. The cost should be about $20.00 US. This fee applies from one to four persons each way.
Others, such as Omega Tours Jungle Lodge have a deal with some of the local taxi drivers that will charge you a very reasonable $20 US dollars. The transfer time from the ferry terminal to your lodge at the Cangrejal River will shorter than 40 minutes.
Are arriving on a bus, or already in town, and are really on a budget? Or perhaps you are looking for a more adventurous option? You can hitch a ride to the “Saopin Bridge” over the Cangrejal River. This one of two bridges in La Ceiba that crosses over the Cangrejal, and is the one on the main CA13 highway. There is a paved street just after crossing the bridge on the mountainside of the road. This is where you can wait for a bus. The area is safe, and there are usually different persons here waiting for the bus. There are only 3 or 4 buses every day. The first one going up towards the communities departs La Ceiba at around 8:30 a.m. The last bus usually passes by around 3:30 in the afternoon.
If you miss the last bus, you can always hitch a ride in a pick up truck. There are many pick up vehicles going up into the mountains towards the villages that will give you a ride. A few of them usually charge a fee to give you a ride. It is always a good idea to ask if you owe them anything once you get off. Since you are in the back of the pick up, you will have to keep your eyes open for the lodge that you are headed towards. Make sure you knock on the side of the truck to let the driver know you are getting off. Do so even if you have communicated with him and let him know where you are going. Be on the lookout, as he may forget that you are in the truck and want a ride only to a certain point.
Getting a ride in the back of the pickup truck is a great way to get from La Ceiba to the Cangrejal River Valley. There is one drawback with this very affordable way to get to your lodge in the Cangrejal River. When the road is dry you will bite some dust. If it’s raining, you will be getting wet in the back of the pickup truck.
If you end up hiring a cab to get from La Ceiba to the Cangrejal River Valley, keep in mind that they will try to charge you as much as they can get away with! Remember that your lodge can arrange for the transfer in a cab for around $20 US. Certainly do not pay more than $30 US, unless it’s after dark. Then up to $40 would be the maximum acceptable. If you take the bus, the fare should be around 10 lempiras per person each way.
I recently had a young couple visiting us at La Villa de Soledad B&B. Together they are a great team and have a vlog promoting Honduras. Daniel is from Honduras, but has lived in the United States for several years. Danielle is from the US and has an Italian Heritage. I invited them over to discover all the things that you can do in the Cangrejal River Valley. Daniel grew up in La Ceiba, and thought he knew that Cangrejal River Valley well. Wow, was he in for a surprise!
We coordinated picking him up in Indura, the luxury golf resort in Tela. what a surprise when they walked into La Villa de Soledad. The spacious areas blend into the outdoors almost seamlessly. Comfy rooms have a great cross ventilation and direct access to a porch. You even have your own personal hammock! But they were more impressed with the high speed internet in the middle of the jungle! Yes, La Villa de Soledad has outstanding high speed internet provided via a fiber optic cable!
A Two Day Itinerary for the Perfect Cangrejal River Adventures: Day One
After giving them a glass of passion fruit juice, we sat down and discussed their itinerary for the next two days. Day one had a white water rafting trip arranged with Omega Tours. The tour is a half day adventure that would start in the morning and end with a lunch at their facilities, just up the road from La Villa de Soledad. The white waters of the Cangrejal River provided some outstanding class III and IV rapids. Best of all, they made friends with a couple from South Africa that was staying at the Omega Tours Lodge.
After Lunch, I would pick them up and give them a transfer three kilometers down the road to Las Cascadas Lodge. There, they would hike up into the forests of Nombre de Dios National Park. The goal was to reach the top of some beautiful waterfalls and then descend by rappelling down the face of the falls. This is Canyoning at its best. Certainly the best place in Honduras, probably in all Central America, for this exciting adventure!
A Much Needed Rest For Another Adventure!
Needless to say, they were exhausted by the end of the day. What an adventure filled day. World Class white water rafting in the morning. Then exploring the tropical rainforest and finding some lovely waterfalls and descend down to the crystal clear pools at the bottom! By the end of the day, some celebrating was in order. So they headed out to the lovely La Jungla Bar to regroup with their new friends from South Africa. After some good times and a couple of cocktails they were ready for a good night sleep at La Villa de Soledad.
It’s hard to describe the peaceful nights at the Villa. The murmur of the water racing down the Cangrejal River towards the Caribbean lulls you to sleep. The usual cool breeze blowing down the valley keeps you nice and cool. You will want to cover up under the cotton sheets, and might even ask for a blanket on some cooler nights. Just before dawn, the sounds of the jungle will let you know it will soon be time to get up and ready for a new adventure. If you are into birding, this will signal the time to get up and out to see all the birds!
A Two Day Itinerary for the Perfect Cangrejal River Adventures: Day Two
For the second day, we had scheduled a hike into Pico Bonito National Park. The lovely El Bejuco Waterfall is at the end of a jungle trail. Watching the fall from the bottom is unbelievable. Daniel was astounded that as a local, he had never visited these stunning falls he had often seen from the road. Access is through an “Indiana Jones” style suspension bridge that spans over 400 feet high across the Cangrejal River. The views from the bridge are outstanding and worth the effort. From the bridge, a 1 ½ hour hike will bring you to the foot of the waterfall. I invite you so take a look at the video that Daniel and Danielle put together to admire the sheer beauty of El Bejuco Waterfall.
If you are looking for a site for adventures in nature, you will be hard pressed to find a better site than the Cangrejal River Valley. You will find that La Villa de Soledad is the ideal lodge for such an adventure. It is within walking distance to all these adventure activities. You will also enjoy our inviting hammocks with the company of a refreshing cocktail to help you relax in nature after a unique day of adventures. This is one experience you will cherish for a lifetime. It will be one of the highlights of your trip to Central America. Best of all, it is an affordable experience in one of the safest areas in Honduras.
Pico Bonito Jungles and the Hog Cays Coral Reefs Offer the Perfect Central America Vacation.
Many people ask why they should travel to Honduras. Here are just a few of the many attractions that will help you answer that question! Pico Bonito and Cayos Cochinos are the best nature and adventure vacation in Central America. Both a easily accessible from the coastal city of La Ceiba. You would be hard pressed to find another area with these assets anywhere in the World! Together, they guarantee the perfect Central America vacation!
Imagine a dream destination. One where you can experience the lush tropical rain forests of Central America. Where within a short one hour, you could replace the rugged jungle clad mountains for an island paradise. Not just any island, a pristine cay in the Caribbean Sea. An island with white sand beaches all around it. Where you can walk into the turquoise waters of the Caribbean and snorkel in pristine coral reefs. There is only one country in Central America where you can do this. It is Honduras, and it is a true Paradise.
The Truth About Safety in Honduras for Travelers
But you will say, Honduras is dangerous! Most “civilized” countries have travel warnings advising their citizens to stay away from it. Sure there are some dangerous places in Honduras. Every country on planet Earth has some of those. Most travelers visiting Honduras are surprised at how safe they feel and the great time they have. I must say that Honduras does not live up to its reputation when it comes to being dangerous for travelers. Sorry guys.
Many travelers visit Honduras every year. They rarely have any incident, and if they do, it is certainly not life threatening. One of the things they enjoy the most is the fact that the country is not overrun by tourists and travelers. Perhaps the one exception is the Island of Roatan. Roatan has become a mayor port of call for cruise ships. Almost 1.2 million cruise ship passengers arrived there last year alone! Depending on the day of the week, you might find that Roatan is kind of a tourist trap, especially if you visit the West End. The East End of the Island is always beautiful and uncrowded.
Honduras’ Caribbean Coast offers some of the highest and most rugged mountains on the Atlantic. Pico Bonito reaches over 8000 feet above sea level and is next to the coast. The area around this peak is Pico Bonito National Park. These mountains offer some of the densest, most impenetrable jungles in Central America.
The Cangrejal River Valley
The best area to explore Pico Bonito National Park is the Cangrejal River Valley. The river forms up high, in the Nombre de Dios National Park Mountains and drops quickly into the Caribbean. There are several different lodges in the area. Some, like La Villa de Soledad are award winning properties where you can enjoy a relaxing time with nature after an activity filled day.
Most of these lodges are less than 6 miles from La Ceiba. You can get there via a dirt, all weather road. The trip is scenic and enjoyable, with magnificent views of the river, the forest and even waterfalls! La Villa de Soledad is truly a jewel you will enjoy!
The Unique Garifuna Culture
A short 30 minute drive from the Cangrejal River will bring you to the Garifuna Village of Sambo Creek. This town is on the Caribbean Coast of Honduras, about 16 km. (10 miles) east of La Ceiba. The villagers are proud Garifuna members. The Garifuna are a seafaring culture, and fish for a living. One of their fishing outposts is at Cayos Cochinos, AKA the Hog Cays. The Cays, within sight from the Sambo Creeks coastline, are only 30 minutes away in a speed boat. At Cayos Cochinos you will find several other fishing outposts. The most unique is Chachahuate Cay: a primitive looking community on a lovely white sand cay. This is the most authentic Garifuna village in the World!
The Hog Cays, AKA Cayos Cochinos
Cayos, as the locals call this small archipelago, is approximately 10 miles off the coast of Sambo Creek. This archipelago consists of two small islands and 13 tiny Cays, or small coral beach islands. Some of the Cays are privately owned. Lodging facilities in Cayos Cochinos are basic. There is one dive resort on Cochino Grande, the largest of the islands. This is the Turtle Bay Harbour Eco Resort. Another option is also located on Cochino Grande, within the community of East End. This are the community owned Laru Beya cabins.
Finally, there are some private homes in the cays that you can rent. Can you imagine renting a home in a private island in the Caribbean? Not only is it possible, it is also affordable! One of the best alternatives is at Cayo Largo Arriba Cay. There is a nice setting there known as Daryl’s Place. He offers several alternatives, including a full home with kitchen and a small on the dock casita for reasonable prices.
The can have the perfect Central America Vacation by combining a stay at the Cangrejal River Valley and at Cayos Cochinos. Mary and Robert, from Toronto, Canada recently visited Honduras for two weeks. They stayed their first four nights at La Villa de Soledad in the Cangrejal River Valley. Then went to Cayos Cochinos and stayed at Daryl’s Place for a week. They came back to La Villa de Soledad for the last three days of their two week vacation. They had the time of their life, reconnected with nature and had a pleasant time.
Did they feel threatened or unsafe at any moment? Not at all! For them, this was the perfect Central America Vacation. Where else can you combine a tropical rain forest setting with a pristine Caribbean Island? Only in Honduras! Come and enjoy the perfect Central America Vacation in Honduras with us!

One of the pleasures of traveling is trying new foods and different ways of preparing tradional meals. Everyone has his preferences when it comes to food. Thus it is difficult to determine where you can find the best food in La Ceiba. There are several restaurants in La Ceiba that offer outstanding food. But where can you find the best food in La Ceiba?
La Villa de Soledad is a bed and breakfast, not a restaurant. Our isolated location on the Cangrejal River Valley makes it hard to find nearby restaurants. Because of this, we do offer our guests lunch and dinner when they wish to eat while spending the night with us. If you go by the reviews that guests put up on travel sites such as tripadvisor, you would think we are a restaurant! Guests who stay and have a meal with us rave about the food we serve.
Soledad, my wife and fellow innkeeper and wife is not a chef. She has never studied at a culinary school. For that matter, she has never taken cooking courses! Yet she has a natural knack when it comes to preparing food. I compare it to singing, you can either carry a tune or you can’t. I can’t carry one for anyone’s business! But Soledad can sure cook a meal! She has a passion for it. She also enjoys experimenting. If she is watching TV, she usually is seeing one of the cooking programs that air on TV. She considers it a good way to get fresh ideas for her meals.
Soledad did work for several years at the restaurant in the Hotel Marina Copan, in Copan Ruinas. There she was a waitress, and as such she would be in and out of the kitchen during the day. There she learned many tricks that she puts to use when cooking a meal for our guests. She also loves to go out to eat to different restaurants. Soledad enjoys trying different dishes, and likes to guess what the ingredients are in her meal. She will ask, although not everybody shares their secrets.
Without doubt, one of the places where you can find the best food in La Ceiba is at La Villa de Soledad! The one drawback, is that we do not have a restaurant that is open to the public! If you wish to try Soledad’s outstanding meals, you will have to spend at least a night at La Villa de Soledad B&B.
If you do visit us to spend the night, you will be glad you did. Our setting is awesome! Our lovely view over the Cangrejal River to Pico Bonito National Park is yours to enjoy. You will be lulled to sleep by the fast waters of the Cangrejal River. Morning will greet you with a natural symphony of birds celebrating a new day. Your cozy room opens out to our gardens, were you can relax in your own personal hammock and see the day break!
But getting back to the best food in La Ceiba, you will find that Soledad will not offer you a printed menu. She will give you a couple of options to choose for each meal. A meal will cost you between 13 and 16 dollars. It can be a bit more expensive depending on what she offers you. She only prepares food for our guests, so take advantage of this unique privilege! A good time to visit La Villa de Soledad is during our low season. Rates are 30% off high season rates, making it a bargain at only $70 dollars per room in a double occupancy. This includes breakfast and taxes! That is only $35 US per person! Our low season rates are in effect between now and December 22nd.
Give yourself a break, and enjoy the best food in La Ceiba at La Villa de Soledad B&B!
